Of course, there were some warning signs with Yakupov. Despite some scouts saying he was a good kid who got along well with teammates, there were other reports who cited his immaturity and cocky attitude. That attitude was very much on display when Russia beat Canada in a game during the World Junior tournament, where Yakupov gave this exuberant interview.

These claims have more recently been backed up, most famously by former NHL general manager Brian Burke who said that Yakupov was the worst draft interview he ever had. He also said that he would not have drafted him if he were available when his then team, the Toronto Maple Leafs, had the fifth overall selection. On top of the attitude issues, there were also concerns about his defensive game, or lack thereof. He was also described as a player who had a lot of flaws but could have people quickly forget about them due to his ability to produce multiple highlight-reel plays per game.

As it turns out looking back, scouts should have taken those flaws more cautiously. Because of how bad the rest of his career was, it is easy to forget that Yakupov had a very solid rookie season. His rookie season happened to take place during the lockout-shortened year.

Under head coach Ralph Krueger that season, he put up 17 goals and 31 points in those 48 games, which put him on a 29 goal, point pace. Unfortunately for the Oilers and Yakupov, that turned out to be by far and away his most successful season in the NHL.

This was certainly disappointing, and some whispers of him being a bust did come up, but the majority of fans and analysts considered the bad season just a blip in the radar. As we now know, that season was just what Yakupov was as a player.

He went on to play two more seasons with the Oilers before being traded to the St. Louis Blues just prior to the beginning of the season. This was told by his father Rail Yakupov in an exclusive interview with Telecomasia.

On April 28, the club from Omsk won the Gagarin Cup for the first time in its history. Louis Blues and Colorado Avalanches. Now everything is normal, Nail is in the recovery stage, at the finish line, thank God. One of the biggest mistakes a new boss can make is implement radical changes immediately rather than observe and assess the strengths and weaknesses of both the individual and the collective.

A lot has been written on how Eakins overthought everything , and how his analytics-based theories on making the Oilers tactically competent were seemingly too complex for teenagers like Yakupov to grasp. But for all his faults, the one thing Eakins did correctly was properly identify the Oilers as a lax bunch uncommitted to winning both the physical and mental battles.

The losing culture in Edmonton become pervasively toxic in a hurry, and it seemed neither Eakins nor Yakupov were prepared to handle the first sign of real adversity, which hit the Oilers like a sledgehammer just a few weeks into the season. A common practice by a losing NHL coach is to shake up the bottom of the lineup before he makes changes to the top. Nail Yakupov usage relative to teammates rank among forwards.

Of course, the kid was far from blameless, as he opened the season with only one goal and three points in his first 16 games. Compounding issues was that Eakins sheltered Yakupov the same way as in his more successful rookie year — heavy on the offensive-zone starts and power play, not much anywhere else.

The problem was that Yakupov in terms of both points and shot attempts made nothing out of his premium opportunities. In fact, the kid was a liability in all three zones. His leash was ridiculously short despite showing a willingness to make plays when they were needed.
