You can get around the city quite easily by foot and we think this is the best way to see as much as possible. Between the Station and the Old Town, we walked through the beautifully manicured gardens of the Mirabell Palace. The next thing we came to was the magnificent River Salzach which you have to cross to get into the heart of the Old Town.

The architecture is amazing and the artwork on the ceilings is incredible. The Cathedral is open every day and is free to enter. Thank you. Yes, this is safe for a pregnant woman. Had a couple questions: a. If we hike up to the Fortress in Old Salzburg do we have to pay for tickets just to visit the ramparts and get the views?
Did you decide to attend any music performances and do you have any advice on the best ones that were not touristy or were would be more fun off the beaten path like Church choirs, university performances etc?
Free the better : c. Did you stay at the Institut St Sebastian? Since you recommend it I am assuming you liked it but any comments or advice incl.
Yes, to get the views like you see in these photos, you will need to pay for tickets. If you want a nice view for free, you can walk up the ramp to the fortress and stop once you get to the ticket booth.
We did not attend any music performances…you could check Trip Advisor for performances that get the best reviews. And we did not stay in the Institut. I picked it as a budget option because it gets great reviews and has a great location. If we picked a budget place in Salzburg, this is where we would stay. For our family of four, I would choose the Quad Room with a private bathroom. Your room pick will depend on how many people are in your family and how important a private bathroom is for you.

Need an Idea for a Day Trip? Salzburg has great shops, but they usually close around or in the evening. Even some of the cafes might close early, so be sure to look at the hours where you want to eat and plan ahead. If you are coming from Spain or Portugal and you are used to eating at or , you might have a hard time finding a place to eat that late at night.
Likewise, with shopping, make sure to plan ahead and do your shopping earlier in the day. If you absolutely need something later in the evening, the train station shops usually stay open later for travelers passing through.
Since most of the cafes close early, it can be hard to find a place to eat dinner in Salzburg. With so many places closed, it puts a strain on the fewer restaurants that stay open later, so they tend to get more crowded. It is the essence of an Austrian village, with a cathedral, churches, quaint shops, and cafes. If you are lucky enough to visit Salzburg in winter, the Christmas markets here are fantastic.
