Joel Whymer joined the Wayne State University athletic staff as an assistant women's basketball coach as well as junior varsity head coach in August He concluded his third year with the Warriors in the spring of In his initial season with the Warriors, WSU had just six returning letterwinners from the previous season, and struggled in close games losing seven contests by eight points or less, plus another two matches that went into double overtime.

He is currently working on a master's degree from Ohio University in coaching. He played his first two seasons collegiately at Lake Superior and , where he totaled points in 47 games with rebounds and 80 assists. A total of 19 of BG's 21 setbacks in were within eight points at some point in the fourth quarter. Fourteen of them were four-point games or closer with under eight minutes to go.

In , Whymer's final season in the Motor City, the Warriors posted a record, more than doubling the win total from the previous year.
