The country music singer, 53, looked back on Joey's last months on Rachael Ray's show on Friday. He told the host that Joey purposefully distanced herself from her two-year-old daughter Indiana so that Rory — who was coming to terms with the idea that he would have to raise her as a single parent — could become the largest presence in the little girl's life.
Joey died in aged 40 due to cervical cancer, with which she was diagnosed shortly after giving birth to Indiana, now four. Sharing: Rory Feek visited the Rachael Ray Show with his four-year-old daughter Indiana on Friday and opened up about the last few months in his late wife Joey's life.
Looking back: The country music singer recounted how Rory pictured in an archive photo decided to make him the greater presence in Indiana's life before she died of cancer. The singer praised his late wife's selfless act and said he likely would have acted differently out of eagerness to spend as much time as possible with Indiana if he had been in her position.
Rory appeared deeply moved as he recounted the last months of his wife's life. He also brightened up when he told Rachael: 'When my wife passed away, one of the things that really surprised me was that she didn't leave me a to-do list. He later elaborated: 'I think I would have laid awake at night with a list of thinks like, "Don't forget to tell her to do this," and, "Don't forget to make sure she brushes her teeth all the time," and all she said is, "You're going to do great.
Selfless: Joey, according to Rory, told him she would 'push away' Indiana, then two, in order to ease the 'transition' that would see Rory take over as a single father.
Rory was then joined by Indiana to present his new children's book, which he said he was inspired to write because he reads to his four-year-old 'all the time'.
