Can i sand my flywheel

Bolt on the flywheel and face that to full clean up. Ok, I know there are different ways to approach it. I do happen to do this stuff for a living again. Then again, you can just pay someone to do it but check their work or buy a remanufactured one. All depends what your time and interest is You need to be a member in order to leave a comment.

If it were mine: If it had no detectable grooving or warping at all and the clutch was not chattering or doing anything nasty before I tore it down, I would hit the wear surface with my 3M brake disk sanding kit, clean it well, and put it back in.

If I were in your shoes, I'd ship it out to a place that would do this correctly. Some of the miata. I've done flywheels before with some emory paper, but I knew the flywheel was already in good condition. When you turn it what you're doing, essentially, is evening up any uneven spots, and removing any glazing or ultra-smoothness from the flywheel so the clutch disc has something grabby to grab onto.

Myah's Daddy. Find More Posts by Myah's Daddy. Be careful about resurfacing a Miata fly wheel. The friction surface and the pressure plate mounting surface are off set from each other. That offset affects the pressure plate's ability to grip the clutch disc. Removing material from the flywheel changes that offset makes it larger.

If the surface is generally in good shape I would just rub it down with emery paper. Find More Posts by nikkidanjo. Pat Dolan. I have always wondered what people are trying to accomplish by using abrasives free-hand on friction surfaces? The whole point of re-surfacing is to flatten the surface, and hand-holding an abrassive paper is just going to scratch the whole thing in the same high and low spots. There is no reason to "break the glaze" as is often said, since it will wear back to the same status in a short time.

What IS important, is to get everything flat and parallel, and that is only done with a surface grinder - which really means an automotive machine shop, not a general shop.

At the same time, they will re-turn the pressure plate mounting surface to the same depth, and THEN you can have them take some excess material off of the perimeter of the flywheel and balance it properly.

Screwing up on that count can make the engine either very rough or blow up in your face. The engine will LOVE it so will you. Simply put, you can't do it by hand. The tolerances are too small. If it's a. If you must screw around with a resurface, have a shop do it, but if the flywheel has problems, I'd just get a new one.

Get it right! I resurfaced one once, but I had a lathe at the shop which made it much easier. I also took the whole extra chunk of webbing off the backside which lightenned it up significantly. As other people have suggested, unless you can put it on a lathe yourself, doing anything else will throw the balance off and you'll be pulling the thing out of the car in the near future.

Zed Head 2, Posted November 9, Posted November 9, Monroe describes looking for heat-checking, and sanding and cleaning if there is none and the surface is flat. I like to experiment though so take that in to account.
